Coined in the 19th century, “Peckerwood” or “Wood” is a derogatory term used Southern blacks to describe poor and/or rural Southern whites. Blacks viewed the blackbird as a symbol of themselves, and viewed the redheaded woodpecker as a representation of whites. In the 1940s, the term “wood” became part of California prison slang and, in the early 1970s, was used to refer to white prison inmates, who were willing to fight to avoid being raped or robbed regardless. Inmates eventually made the term peckerwood a source of pride, and the term was adopted by white power gang members around the late 1980s.
